To attribute the complex problem of totalitarianism simply to external factors and the evil character of a dictator was a simple and hard-hitting tactic - but it did not reveal the profound roots of this tragedy. Elements of anti-Westernization included censoring religion and technological superiority, while signs of weakness in the Soviet military like lost battles or frightened soldiers were expurgated to further nationalistic goals. Letting the Jews out of Russia would represent an even more serious departure from Communist doctrine. But the native balladeer Vladimir Vysotskiy, widely popular in the Soviet Union, was denied official recognition because of his iconoclastic lyrics see Literature and the Arts, ch.

Khrushchev had studied the events of the Bay of Pigs; he would have understood if Kennedy had left Castro alone or destroyed him but when Kennedy was rash enough to strike at Cuba but not bold enough to finish the job, Khrushchev decided he was dealing with an inexperienced young leader who could be intimidated and blackmailed. Chinese discontent with the new Soviet leadership stemmed from low levels of Soviet aid, feeble Soviet support for China in its disputes with Taiwan and India, and the new Soviet doctrine of peaceful coexistence with the West, which Mao viewed as a betrayal of Marxism-Leninism. By silence, the "secret speech" and de-Stalinization have condoned the worst of the dead leader's depredations. In his memoirs Nixon described the impression that Khrushchev made on him. Out of these events arose the so-called Brezhnev Doctrine see Glossarywhich warned that the Soviet Union would act to maintain its hegemony in Eastern Europe see Central Europe, ch.

With the exception of the suppression of the Hungarian uprising, no other aspect of Soviet policy since has done so much to dismay the Communist movement in Europe and the Americas. I joked with him that we had cast the deciding ballot in his election to the Presidency over that son-of-a-bitch Richard Nixon. Khrushchev intended to place Soviet nuclear missiles on Cuba, threatening nuclear holocaust and essentially deterring future invasion of the island by the US. Stalin's callowness over the importance of the director's work was of great benefit to the filmmakers since, "with few exceptions, they survived. Finally, mistrust over military intentions clouded East-West relations during this time.
